CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Red
Character Canon: Pokémon (Gameverse)

History: A wild link appears

AU History:

Red grew up to a loving mother and father. Red's father, while not rich was noted as one of Union's best Trainers of his time, and consequently, Red grew up around Pokemon and was very comfortable with them. He would also bring Red presents from far places and occasionally even take him outside as long as it was not farther than the Verdant Forest. This went on and people started expecting great things out of him until he was 8. One day, his father abruptly vanished, and Red's mother couldn't get a word out of anyone on why, just he was out and should be back soon. Soon never happened, and whether Red's father just cut ties with them, went on a journey for Union to find places even farther out, was exiled, or the Council tapped him for a duty that required he cut ties, no one can say for sure, just that no one seems to know what happened. Perhaps he was killed finally by wild Pokemon. Red though, believes with all his heart and soul that his father is alive, and over the next 10 years he grew somewhat bitter about the possibility of him just skipping out on him and his mother.

School was a serious consideration however, and while Red applied to be a Trainer at a rather young age, he showed promise with his family's pet, a Cleffa named Judy that Red's mother had befriended but never properly bonded with. Judy evolved under Red's care, but while he'd make regular trips outside; he wasn't deeply serious about training and focused more on his school work until a rival appeared. They pushed Red for more, and then more still when he had to work to just to measure up. It was some where during this time Red finally decided that yes. He wanted to be a serious Trainer. He wanted to beat his rival unquestionably, and be even better than his father; with the small personal victory that he wouldn't walk out of whatever family he made.

Though, time has a way of throwing snags. Red never slacked on his school work, and thus eventually graduated with enough promise that he might even be able to go to the University. With the delay of finishing his education however, Red discovered one day that while Judy was just as tough as any Pokemon still, the poor dear was getting old as she'd been friends with Red's mom when she was several years younger, before Red was even born. Likely not enough to be a serious risk, Red decided not to chance it and retired Judy from battling, and she has returned to her status as beloved pet Clefairy.

This perhaps reminded Red that he promised himself to be a great Trainer, and while he's still debating on the University, for now he's going to find a good partner to forge his path with.

Canon Personality: Red is a Silent Protagonist.

Now, to break down this term for those unfamiliar means that the game developers try to help the player experience the world a little more fully. They want the player to think they are Red, they are the ones on the quest, and not just playing through a pre-conceived story. The draw back is of course that Red doesn't speak. It is implied several times he does talk, but the player is allowed to "make up" their own responses mentally for what they would say if addressed. Further more, Red has several options in the game for how he can proceed. There is a largely static "correct" way to go about this, and Red's personality comes as follows.

Red can be thought of as very new to the Pokémon world as a Trainer, but he's studied on them in preparation for his day, and became close to Professor Oak, who was impressed with Red's drive to learn more about Pokemon. This implies Red to be very smart, and even though the game implies Red makes a few errors on his Pokemon Journey, this is okay because; Red is only 10, at best. Red may have studied a lot on Pokemon but has no practical experience with them. Pallet is a very small and somewhat out of the way town, and can be implied that not many leave except to go on a Pokemon Journey.

One can gather that Red's Rival, Green (Or Blue if you completely ignore the Manga) are very close despite the Rival's abrasive personality, because they seem interested in eachother's progress prior to each battle and it is implied from what text the NPCs of the game give that Red is warm and friendly, if not a little awkward at times. As for how long they get along in eachother's company, I can't speculate, because that would involve trying to disseminate the Rival's personality, and this isn't his app! Regardless of whether they get along well or not, both do seem to care for eachother, as implied by the Rival 3 (or more) years later in Gold/Silver/Crystal.

It can also be gathered that Red apparently takes to Pokemon naturally as many are impressed by his skill with them despite his inexperience, as evidenced by the frequent recruitment attempts by Team Rocket throughout Red/Blue/Yellow. Giovanni in particular seems to value what Red could do for his organization if he were a member, of course Team Rocket hardly has proper goals for an aspiring Trainer, so Red promptly turns them down every time, whether he is tempted at all is up to player interpretation.

Finally, Red is proven to be very driven, given his goal was to complex the Pokédex for Professor Oak, it is implied he succeeds. Further more, he challenged the Elite Four, and finally his Rival who had just became Champion and won. Afterwards in Gold/Silver/Crystal, he had apparently abdicated the title and left it to Lance, traveling to Johto to learn of it and residing in Mt. Silver, continuing his training until the player in the form of Gold or Crystal challenges him, upon which he vanishes, implying he is training anew which also talks about his dedication.

AU Deviation: Well, first off, while it might be endearing, in this much more dangerous setting, Red has let go of a lot of his naivety regarding Pokemon as; they will kill him otherwise. He's also worked with Pokemon for some time as opposed to not in his Canon.

Most of Red's traits are actually the same, they are just applied or used in different ways. Red is still quiet friendly, and likely still a little awkward because of what may be likely something of a very mild form of ADD instead of just being from a very small town. He is still very smart, and actually applied his studious nature to his school, which is why he may now attend the University if he wishes. He still has a talent for picking up things quickly, perhaps inherited from his father. His drive rather that being focused solely on Pokemon has been moved to his schoolwork because of a practical standpoint of needing to make sure he can provide for himself later. His ADD extends to occasionally zoning out when left to his own devices, day-dreaming of strategies until roused from it by an external source, and he frequently looks sleepy from all the concentration, but is quite sharp in reality.

Some of Red's likes that aren't Pokemon include juggling, or toying with a small set of balls his father gave him when he was very very young, they come in many colors, but only share aesthetics with pokeballs, not retaining the ability to change sizes or even open. Red is fairly secretive about them because his father made him promise to be, and because as he grew older, he realized the rest of Union would have made him throw them away.

Which leads to Red's father. While Red is very angered by his father not being around, and there being a good chance he is still alive, Red learned a lot of what he knew of Pokemon from him, and will keep small sentimental things to remember him. Conversely, Red aims to surpass his father in every way possible, find him, and tell him how worthless he is for not having been around for him and his mother. Needless to say Red's father is a very complicated subject that even Red himself hasn't discovered his true feelings about, and this frustration can result in irrational anger.

Other things Red likes are competent Trainers, and for this reason has mulled over joining the Rangers more than once, but like his schooling, hasn't yet made up his mind.

And, onto Red's ability to commit. Unlike in Canon where things were much more simple and direct and school seems nigh-optional, this AU does facilitate the need for one to plan at least to a small degree what they will do at such time as they stop being a Trainer, unless Union gives very nice pension to those that put themselves on line. Red does not have commitment problems, and just needed that small push to get serious about his training, but he did want to finish at least basic schooling. This Red is slightly more sensible and practical, again from being older. Still, one has to question the practicality of vowing to themselves about being the best Trainer in Union.

Also as to be expected, due to the age difference from his Canon and AU counterparts, Red is more mature, and women are an interest, because he likes them, and two, he really wants to settle down one day, raise a family, and not leave it abruptly like his father.

Canon Abilities: Red like most humans from Pokémon does not technically have any abilities. However he is noted for being able to endure extreme conditions through training himself as hard as he does his Pokemon, and also as a result; is implied to have a very deep bond with them.

Enlightened Abilities: Far From Ordinary, Master of Battle perk. His affinity will be with the Fire Type. Also if permitted I would eventually like him to have his extreme condition endurance and deeper bonding, much later in the game of course and not to the levels of an Enlightened.

Starter Pokémon: Red will not have a Starter upon being accepted and will have to seek one out.

Notes/Special Considerations: Red's father being a bit of a celebrity due to his skills as a Trainer, until he abruptly vanished a decade ago? As for if it would actually affect the plot, that depends on if Red ever gets a dad proxy by another player that wants to set up something with the mods. Also, Red's toy balls, they do nothing except look like Pokeballs, and have exactly zero special powers.

SAMPLES

First-Person: Have a friendly argument.

Third-Person:
Red sat in the chair of the small office, a hand in his bag that's always at his side. A lot of people really wanted to know what it was he was playing with in it, because occasionally there would be a soft clink; many assumed it was a Pokemon and he never bothered to clarify. The action of handling one of the toys his father left him was soothing in an odd way, and he never removed his hand from it even as the Instructor went through some basic questions for Red.

What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
"If you mean Judy, my oldest friend." There's a pause, and Red grunts in a bit of frustration as one of the balls slips from his fingers, clinking against the rest in the bag. Picking up another, he cleared his throat, "But other have an important role too. Friends, allies, challenges. I can't imagine a life without Pokemon."

What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
A pause, and a clink. "Dedication and stability, have to say. I really admire it."

What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
"Passion." Clink. "Definitely passion. Someone that's ready to be with me through thick and thin, good and ill. Somebody I can call a real partner."

What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
A sharp clack, "To help provide for and maintain Union." A lie, but an easy enough one that he didn't feel bad telling it as he usually would. Really to himself, Red's greatest duty was surpassing his father.

When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
"Well. Defeating it. That isn't to say kill it, but it's nice having a serious challenge. It pushes you. I would think that it would help with the bonding, understanding eachother's wills through a battle. Then it could be researched without it being unsure or frightened."

What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?
Red is silent for several seconds, mulling it over, the clink of the contents of his bag getting louder as he swirled two spheres around in his palm. "I think..." He trailed of, finally withdrawing his hand from the bag, having let go of his toys for the moment. "The cave. The unknown must be known so we can determine if it is safe or not."
